What Can You Do To Help Boost An Elderly Person’s Confidence?

So often, those of us who live with elderly loved ones concern ourselves with their physical well-being and overall health. Of course, we should. No one needs to remind us that, as we age, we develop greater challenges related to our strength, balance and mobility. However, it’s important to bear in mind that with those challenges come emotional hardships. A lack of confidence is commonly a result of experiencing a mobility issue.

Taking steps to restore a senior’s independence is a huge part of elder care. So what important steps can be taken to boost an elderly person’s confidence?

Take your elderly loved one out on the town.

We’re not suggesting that you try to turn the older adult in your life into a party animal. However, keeping him/her active will do a lot to make him/her feel wanted, valued and loved. Offer to take your elderly loved one out to events and/or to participate in activities that you know will be enjoyable. This feeling of inclusion will work wonders in the world of building his/her self-esteem.

“It’s often difficult for seniors to get out of the house without assistance, and when they do get out it’s often because someone else needs to do errands,” notes Beth Brown of Palm Beach’s Home Care Assistance, “Make a point to arrange special outings for you and your senior loved one to movie theatres, restaurants, or other places he or she enjoys.”

Promote healthy eating.

There is likely no list of tips involving self-betterment that should omit the act of eating healthy foods. One’s nutrition is paramount to his/her overall health and well-being. That said, when one is healthy, he/she is a lot more likely to feel confidence in his/her ability to manage everyday tasks. Not to mention, healthy older adults are a lot more likely to want to participate in activities that will keep them involved in the lives of their loved ones.

“The truth is, when you do what you know is good for you, like eating healthy and exercising, you feel better about yourself,” says Beth Sager of Griswold Home Care, “When you do things that aren’t good for you, you might enjoy them in the moment, but you’ll feel bad about yourself later.”

Work to boost strength and balance.

One of the top reasons seniors lose their self-confidence is because they can’t do things on their own the way they used to when they were younger. As mentioned, diminished strength and balance is a prevalent issue among older adults. Find ways to help mitigate the limitations that come with certain mobility issues. It’s a hugely important step in growing the self-esteem of your elderly loved one.

“If your mom is steady on her feet and less likely to fall, she will be able to feel more confident caring for herself and getting around,” assures Tom Laborde of Aegis Living, “Encourage her to take balance classes or chair yoga at a local senior center or offer to walk regularly with her to keep up her strength. A decline in health and strength can easily lead to a lower self-esteem and a loss of confidence.”
