Finding Holiday Gifts Your Elderly Loved One Will Love

We are officially two weeks away from Christmas! We’re willing to bet that, like many other Canadians, you haven’t fully completed your holiday gift shopping yet. It’s understandable. You’re a busy person. Between work, the kids and caring for your aging parent, you have a lot on your plate. It’s hard to even think about what to buy, especially for the older adult in your life. But, don’t worry – the following are some holiday gift ideas your elderly loved one will love!

Big button telephone.

The majority of seniors aren’t all that tech savvy. So, for the most part, super advanced technology won’t offer you anything by way of good gift ideas for seniors. Instead, you may need to go the opposite route. For many older adults, older technology works for them just fine. Buying a standard telephone for your aging parent is a great way to help him/her keep in touch with friends and family. A telephone with big buttons, however, makes dialing especially easy.

“Many of the elderly have not jumped on the cell phone bandwagon and still prefer traditional button phones,” agrees Annette McDermott on LoveToKnow.com, “But as they age, the buttons may be hard to see. Problem solved with (a) big button phone. It has large, easy-to-see buttons and speaker and redial functionalities. It can also be programmed with up to three important speed dial numbers.”

White noise machine.

Does your elderly loved one have trouble sleeping? If so, he/she certainly isn’t the only senior to have issues with restlessness at night. In some cases, a new bed may be required. In others, it’s all about creating a peaceful environment – and that doesn’t always entail dead silence. A white noise machine is known to help older individuals who battle with sleep disorders and insomnia.

According to GeriatricNursing.org, a white noise machine can provide comforting background noise to help seniors drift off at the same time each night. “There is a choice of noises with ocean waves and rainforest noises alongside the typical white noise stream,” the website explains of the product, “The bedside device also has timers to help users plan their nightly regime. With regular use, this could prove to be a great help for many conditions.”

Wireless headset system.

People of all ages enjoy music, television and movies. However, for many older adults, it can be hard to hear what’s coming through the speakers. A wireless headset device will work wonders in rejuvenating the joy your elderly loved one gets from watching his/her favourite shows and listening to his/her favourite songs.

McDermott recommends a wireless headset system known as TV Ears. “It offers individual control so hearing-challenged people can have the volume up while others listen at a level comfortable for them,” she explains, “The headsets also help diminish background noise and lower audio spikes commonly experienced during commercials.”
