4 Meaningful Ways To Show Seniors Love And Connection

With February well underway, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! The annual celebration of love and togetherness is commonly shared between romantic partners. This is why, for many seniors, it can be a lonely day. Whether due to the loss of a spouse, distance from family or mobility challenges, older adults often experience feelings of isolation. This is especially true on a holiday focused on relationships.

At LifeCare Mobility Solutions, we believe that love is about connection, companionship and making sure our seniors feel valued and included. Here are four meaningful ways to show seniors love and connection:

1. Offer some of your quality time.

Valentine’s Day is known for its gift-giving. Boxes of chocolate and bouquets of flowers are classics. But, for older adults, nothing beats the power of simple in-person connections. A visit from a loved one can brighten a senior’s day. It can remind them of how cherished they are. Consider taking your elderly loved one out on a simple coffee date. Whip up a homemade dinner or spend an afternoon reminiscing over old photos. Your presence is the best present!

“A University of California San Francisco study found that 43% of the seniors reported feeling lonely,” reports Right At Home, “They feel forgotten, alone, and think if they even matter enough. A meaningful cross-age relationship will decrease the feelings of social isolation, and it also increases their self-esteem, belonging, and well-being in older adults.”

2. Invite them to social activities.

Many seniors feel lonely because they don’t have opportunities to socialize. You don’t have to wait until Valentine’s Day to invite them to participate in community events, church gatherings or senior centre activities. Giving your elderly loved one a chance to connect with others can make a huge difference. Be mindful that many community centres organize themed social events. You may also wish to get the senior in your life involved in a book club or hobby group.

Look into Toronto’s Circle of Care. They offer numerous opportunities for your elderly loved one to socialize with other seniors. “Circle of Care offers lots of different, free activities and programs for seniors to socialize, and learn together – both online and in-person,” informs their website, “While most of our offerings are in English, some are also available in Russian.”

3. Arrange a thoughtful surprise.

Everyone loves a little surprise! A handwritten card, a phone call or a small care package can bring unexpected joy to a senior on Valentine’s Day. Maybe, you could deliver a meal or a favourite treat. A home-cooked meal or a favourite dessert is a wonderful way to show love. Why not send flowers or a gift basket? A beautiful bouquet or a selection of favourite snacks can brighten a senior’s day.

Heart to Home Meals also recommends a spa day as a Valentine’s Day gift for seniors. “Many spas offer senior discounts or special packages for older adults,” they point out, “From having a nice sweat in the sauna (please be sure consult with your doctor) to enjoying a couples massage, spas are a great way to spend time together while relaxing and unwinding.”
