Showing Gratitude To Our Elderly Loved Ones This Thanksgiving

This forthcoming weekend, families across the country will gather to celebrate Thanksgiving! All over Canada, this holiday long weekend will be a time to share delicious meals, enjoy the crisp beauty of autumn and reflect on the blessings in our lives. At LifeCare Mobility Solutions, we’d like to take this opportunity to wish all Canadians a very Happy Thanksgiving! We hope it’s one filled with warmth, joy and gratitude.

Thanksgiving is not only about turkey and pumpkin pie. It’s also about appreciating the people who make our lives meaningful. For many of us, that includes our elderly loved ones. Seniors are the heart of our families, the keepers of traditions and the storytellers who connect us to our roots. This holiday is the perfect reminder to give back and show them how much they mean to us.

Spend quality time with your elderly loved ones.

They say the best things in life are free. That’s true since one of the greatest gifts you can give is your time. It could be sharing a meal, playing a game or just sitting down for a chat. The beloved seniors in your life will cherish these moments of connection.

Be sure to give them your open ears and listen to their stories. Every senior has a wealth of life experience. Ask them about past Thanksgivings, their childhood memories or lessons they’d like to pass down. Listening shows respect. It also creates lasting family bonds.

Send a thoughtful letter.

In our current digital age, handwritten letters or cards hold extra special meaning. A short note expressing your appreciation, recalling a fond memory or simply saying “thank you” can be treasured for years. Encourage children in your family to write cards as well. Seniors love receiving messages from the younger generation.

“Handwritten notes are brain-friendly for the receiver too,” informs Liz Guthridge of Connect Consulting Group, “Handwritten notes require more effort to read than an email or text message. When you’re the receiver, you’ve got to open the envelope and read (or decipher the handwriting if you’re reading a note from me). That plus the surprise of getting correspondence that’s not a bill or junk mail gives the handwritten note a sense of novelty, which your brain enjoys.”

Help with everyday tasks.

Prepare a plate at the dinner table and help with tidying up. These small acts of service can make a big difference in a senior’s day. Offering help allows them to relax and feel cared for. Remember that as their mobility or energy levels change, even simple chores can become challenging for older adults.

Offering to help with errands, meal prep or housework is a practical way to show care. If they use mobility aids like a stair lift, power lift chair or home hospital bed, make sure everything is functioning properly. A small check-up or adjustment can go a long way toward making their daily life safer and easier.

Offer the gift of independence.

One way families can support seniors is by giving them tools to remain active and independent. A mobility scooter is a cost-effective alternative to an electric wheelchair and an excellent solution for older adults who can walk short distances but need extra assistance for longer outings.
