When you think about the summertime, you likely don’t have your bathroom in mind. After all, it’s the season when we all spend more time outdoors in the sunshine. It’s important to know, however, that summer actually brings an increased risk of accidents in the bathroom. It’s considered one of the most dangerous rooms in the home for a reason. For seniors and individuals with mobility challenges, bathroom-related incidents become even more likely during the summertime.
Excessive moisture can cause slips and falls.
In the summer, heat and humidity increase indoor moisture levels. This can lead to slick bathroom floors from condensation or more frequent showering. As Sealed points out, “humidity can also come up through the soil, especially if your house is near a lake or river. And excess moisture from cooking, bathrooms, appliances, and showers can also raise the moisture levels in your home.”
To minimize the risk of falling in the bathroom this summer, install non-slip mats in the tub and on the floor outside the shower. It’s also wise to use a bathroom safety grab bar or shower chair to reduce strain and risk during bathing. As well, keep a dehumidifier in the bathroom to help control humidity levels. This is especially important in homes without central air conditioning.
Heat exhaustion can cause dizziness during hot showers.
Most of us find hot showers relaxing. This doesn’t mean they should be taken, especially during the summer. Seniors may already be more prone to heat-related illnesses. A steamy bathroom can easily push the body’s temperature too high. This may lead to dizziness, fainting or confusion. Heat-related dizziness is of particular concern for those on medications that affect hydration or blood pressure.
“People with underlying heart, neurological, or circulation problems can develop worrying symptoms like dizziness if the water gets too hot,” notes Rachael Zimlich of Healthline. To prevent heat exhaustion, take cool or lukewarm showers during summer. Always keep the bathroom well-ventilated with a fan or open window. Also, be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. This will help you to avoid overheating during hygiene routines.
Dehydration can impact mobility.
It’s important that we don’t simply gloss over the importance of hydration. You won’t be surprised to know that dehydration is more common during the summer. It can lead to muscle cramps, weakness and light-headedness. These symptoms make everyday movements riskier, including using the toilet or getting in and out of the bathtub. To prevent dehydration, drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
“Adequate hydration can significantly improve physical performance by ensuring your muscles and joints function optimally, improving endurance, and reducing the likelihood of muscle cramps and fatigue,” reports Cheryl Santa Maria of The Weather Network.
