As the spring season officially gets underway, the world’s population is called upon to think about the health of the planet. Earth Hour will take place this Saturday, March 22nd between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. The initiative encourages individuals, businesses and communities to turn off non-essential lights for that hour.
As the Earth Hour website informs us, we are all being asked to take things a step further than just switching off the lights. “Give an hour for Earth too,” it requests, “Anyone, anywhere can join by spending 60 minutes doing something – anything – positive for our planet.” For seniors, participating in Earth Hour can be both enjoyable and meaningful. However, it’s essential to do so safely.
Use safe alternative lighting.
Needless to say, it’s imperative that older adults are able to clearly see in front of them when walking throughout their homes. Remember that turning off the lights doesn’t mean sitting in complete darkness. Seniors, especially those with mobility challenges, should utilize battery-powered LED candles. They provide soft glows without the fire risk of traditional candles.
Solar-powered lanterns are also good options. Bring them in from outside for natural, safe light sources. Make use of glow-in-the-dark tape or nightlights as well. Placing them along walkways or near staircases can help prevent trips and falls.
Enjoy Earth Hour with a companion.
Many seniors battle with bouts of loneliness and depression. If you plan on participating in Earth Hour, it is certainly no time to be alone. Get together with family, a caregiver or a friend in order to enhance the experience and improve your safety. Consider sharing stories or reminiscing about past experiences. Perhaps, you could play a board game or cards using your alternative lighting source.
“Companionship is more than just having someone around; it involves building meaningful connections with seniors,” notes Comfort Keepers, “Research shows that regular social interactions positively influence mental health and cognitive function in older adults. Elder care at home that incorporates companionship significantly reduces feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression, promoting overall happiness and contentment.”
Take time to enjoy nature.
Earth Hour reminds us to show our planet some love. It provides us with an opportunity to appreciate the natural world. So why not sit by a window or step onto a porch to enjoy the fresh air and night sky? Practice deep breathing or gentle stretching for relaxation. Earth Hour offers the perfect time to reflect on positive memories or set personal goals for a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
The Earth Hour website offers opportunities to learn about nature loss and biodiversity. “Nature underpins everything around us – from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe, to our very livelihoods and quality of life,” it points out, “Nature is vital for all our futures and and is one of our strongest allies against the climate crisis – and yet, the rate of global loss of nature in the last 50 years is unprecedented in human history.”
