3 Steps To Avoiding Slips And Falls At Home

Among those tips are many pieces of advice about how to avoid slips and falls in the home. Naturally, it’s important to practice as many safety measures as possible in order to keep our elderly loved ones from slipping and falling. However, there are steps that we should all take in order to keep ourselves upright.

You’re certainly never too young to fall down! So don’t assume that safety measures don’t apply to you. Here are three steps to avoiding slips and falls at home:

1. Always carry a small flashlight.

If this sounds unrealistic, consider getting a miniature flashlight that doubles as a key chain. Chances are you have your keys with you a lot of the time. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a light source on you. They’re very handy in the event of a power outage or when you’re walking around the home late at night. The elderly loved one in your home would certainly benefit from having access to a flashlight at all times.

“Using a small flashlight can help you keep your footing when there’s not enough light to comfortably navigate around your home,” says Handicare, “These days, you can carry a tiny but powerful flashlight on your keychain. Most smartphones come equipped with a flashlight as well, and if not, there are apps that will turn your mobile device into a flashlight.”

2. Clear all of the clutter off the floors.

Sometimes, we forget how much we use our floors as storage space. Many people take their shoes off as soon as they enter their homes. This makes sense. But not tucking those shoes away in the front closet doesn’t. By ensuring that there is nothing on the floor to trip over, you significantly decrease the risk of slips and falls in your home.

“Keeping your floor clear of clutter reduces the likelihood of tumbling to the ground,” affirms Handicare, “If you think this one’s obvious, take a look at your basement stairs or the busiest rooms in your house. Chances are you will see obstacles on the steps or floor that you didn’t realize were there.”

3. Toss out those throw rugs.

Health advocates are anti-carpet. They accumulate far too much dust to be considered healthy additions to the home. For a completely different reason, we would agree that removing throw rugs and carpets from the home would be a great safety measure. Throw rugs tend to bunch up to become significant tripping hazards. A clear and clean floor is a much safer bet.

“Watch out for rugs,” warns Handicare, “Rugs and carpets, particularly around the edges and in transition areas, are the culprits in the majority of slips and falls occurring at home. Make sure the sides and corners of your rugs are secure.”
