On behalf of the entire LifeCare Mobility Solutions team, we’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Canada Day tomorrow! Even with the coronavirus pandemic not yet behind us, there is still plenty you can do to celebrate the 153rd birthday of our nation. Of course, safety measures must continue to be taken. And this is especially true if you plan on celebrating Canada Day with the senior in your life. How can you do so safely?
Light exercise is always recommended for older adults. As long as they are capable, get out and enjoy the warm and fresh air that summer provides us. On Canada Day, why not go for a leisurely stroll through your neighbourhood? You’re bound to see some flags and other decorations that will make the walk more festive.
Trillium Boutique Senior Living also suggests that you “take time to remember veterans by visiting a memorial, donating to charity, reflecting on memories with loved ones, or writing a thank you note to a member of the military.”
Many would argue that you haven’t truly celebrated Canada Day until you’ve watched the night time fireworks display. As long as the loud bangs and pops of the fireworks aren’t troubling to your elderly loved one, bring him/her out for a night of some amazing visual stimuli. Be sure, of course, to ensure he/she is comfortable at the event.
“Bring a comfortable chair for your loved one, some snacks and drinks, bug spray, ear plugs, and your smile, for what is bound to be an exciting night of celebration,” advises Senior Helpers Canada president, Tennille Kerrigan, “Plan around accessibility, planning to visit locations that offer parking, well-lit paths, and a short walk to the occasion.”
Does the older adult in your life suffer from a mobility issue that may make going out difficult? If so, why not bring the Canada Day celebrations to him/her? Set up your backyard or even your indoor living space with a party atmosphere. Spread out the food and drinks and be sure to hang those Canada flags! Throwing a stay-at-home Canada Day celebration is a great way to ensure your elderly loved one doesn’t miss out on the fun.
“Some older adults may have health or mobility issues that may limit their abilities to attend local parades or fireworks displays,” points out Trillium Boutique Senior Living, “If this is the case, include your loved ones in your festivities by bringing the party right to them. Whether you make red and white desserts or crafts, share memories, or watch a patriotic movie, there are many ways to adapt your activities to your loved one’s needs.”
