How To Have A Merry Christmas During COVID-19

By | News & Events | December 23, 2020 | Comments (0)

On behalf of the entire LifeCare Mobility Solutions team, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and joyous holiday season! The big day arrives in just a couple of days and most of us are quite excited for it. It’s only right we get to celebrate a cherished holiday in spite of the awful coronavirus pandemic. But with that said, it’s important to note that, this year, we must have safe celebrations.

Especially here in Toronto, where a lockdown is in effect, we have to keep our family celebrations small. Gathering in large groups is strongly cautioned against. Especially if you live with seniors, you’re undoubtedly aware of the need to continue with social distancing practices to avoid any spread of the virus. So what can you do to have a Merry Christmas in spite of COVID-19?

Make holiday-themed arts and crafts.

Excellent for both young and old family members are arts-based activities. Firstly, they keep you and your family safely entertained inside your home. Secondly, art and crafts can engage everyone in group-based activities. The holiday season offers up such ideas as making snowmen out of cotton balls or reindeer out of pipe cleaners. On GoodHousekeeping.com, Juliana LaBianca suggests making Christmas masks.

“You can make these cute masks out of paper plates for a fun Christmas craft,” she explains, “And when you’re done, you can use them to take photo booth-style pictures to commemorate the holiday.”

Go for a drive in your community.

This year, holiday light shows have grown in popularity as they’ve been set up as the drive-through variety. With your family safely inside your car, take a short cruise around your community to help put you all in the holiday spirit. Take in the sights of all of the lights and decorations in your local area.

“Grab a hot beverage and drive around your city (or a neighbouring one) checking out the Christmas lights and decorations people have worked so hard to put up,” encourages Alicia Dubay of World Vision.

Express your love.

In 1970, The Jackson 5 released their Christmas album. Among its many wonderful songs is “Give Love On Christmas Day”. In it, a 12 year-old Michael Jackson sings, “no greater gift is there than love.” This sentiment rings especially true in 2020. How lucky are we to have our loved ones in our lives? This holiday season, find some unique ways to offer gestures that convey your love.

“If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s how much the people in our lives mean to us, so go ahead and spread some happiness where you can,” encourages Lisa Milbrand on RealSimple.com, “Write down how much the people you love mean to you and send it out to them. Make Christmas cookies and leave some with your friends and neighbours – or drop off pizza or other treats at a local nursing home, hospital, or fire department to brighten the lives of the people there.”
