The Importance Of Keeping Your Elderly Loved One Active This Summer

We are still several weeks away from the official start of the summer season. But, for many Canadians, June 20th can’t come soon enough! Not only have we had to endure seemingly endless months of chilly temperatures, but the pandemic has also dampened our ability to have fun. With the summer coming, there is confidence that warmer, sunnier and happier days are ahead!

Don’t assume that the elderly loved one in your life can’t enjoy the warm weather. In fact, it can be argued that it’s more important than ever to help the older adult in your life stay active this summer. What can you do to ensure that?

Plan a picnic at a local park.

Because social distancing has been the norm for the past year, we haven’t had many opportunities to be around others. A picnic in the park is a great way to both keep socially distant from others while not being completely isolated. Taking your elderly loved one out to the park for a picnic is a great way to enjoy the warmth and sunshine in a safe and enjoyable way.

“Get back to nature by packing a lunch and eating outdoors,” encourages New Jersey’s Unity Healthcare, “Picnics serve as a great way to get out and soak up some Vitamin D. Fresh air and good conversation are great for both seniors and caregivers. You can even arrange some picnic games for senior citizens.”

Get some outdoor exercise.

Never let it be lost on you that older adults need exercise too. Of course, no one recommends any heavy weight lifting. But light walks and stretching are always good ways to get the blood flowing. The summertime provides ample opportunities to take those walks and to get that exercise outside. Just be sure to have your elderly loved one wear light clothing and bring along some water to stay hydrated.

“While the heat may limit some outdoor activities, it’s still important to get outside,” agrees Nevada’s dementia care experts at Vineyard Henderson, “Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, which can help fight osteoporosis, anxiety and depression. Vitamin D also boosts the immune system and improves brain health. Getting outside for even a brief period, should be a priority for all aging adults–especially those fighting memory diseases.”

Go fishing.

Do you live in a town with a nearby lake or river? If so, fishing is probably one of your favourite pastimes. Don’t let this summer go by without taking the elderly loved one in your life on a fishing excursion. As Unity Healthcare points out, fishing is a relaxing activity that appeals to many older adults.

“Seniors might enjoy spending time with old friends or perhaps with a grandchild,” notes their site, “When going on a fishing trip, seniors have the chance to spend quality time with others. Many seniors venture to local fishing spots during the early morning hours or in the evening when temperatures are not as warm.”
